How do I add players/controls in Wii Super Smash Brothers?

I'm confused as to how to add players/controllers in Wii Super Smash Brothers. It's only recognizing one controller. What am I missing????

After you've synched up extra controllers (hit the red buttons under the Wii SD card slot and the Wiimote's battery compartment), hit any button on the Wiimotes to turn them on. Then, on the character select screen, at the bottom where it says "None", click it and it will change to a player (obviously, which slot you click None determines which controller).
