Fixing my NES game system?

I found an old NES game system that my grandparents played and I was able to get it to turn on, but then it starts flashing on/off, so I was wondering if there was some way to fix it or if it would just be cheaper and easier to go out and buy a working one from gamestop or someplace? Please let me know.

I don't think you could buy one from gamestop but they're often available online over eBay or even CraigsList.

The flashing light is primarily caused by interference with the the last few pins that connect to the lockout chip. Try cleaning your cartridge first with a small amount of rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip.

If that doesn't fix it, try twisting the power cord that plugs into the NES with it on, and see if it brings the game up when it's twisted to a certain spot. Sometimes with old power cords like that there's a "sweet spot" where an electric current will only pass through it in a certain position. Fixing the power cord is a highly possible solution, I actually had to buy a new one online once.

If that doesn't work, take the NES apart and clean the connector pins on the system, and make sure they're not damaged.

Another crazy idea is to turn the game on without having the cartridge pushed down. This actually worked after I had my NES refurbished 10 years ago, and it's actually a good thing because it keeps my games in better condition. Give it a try before taking your NES apart
