The good old days of Ebay are over, and sellers are beginning to Quit Ebay. Sellers and buyers alike reminisce on what Ebay used to be like, and the corporate monster they have turned into. Ebay's best sellers have begun to quit and boycott the auction service with the implementation of the latest policy changes introduced on May 20, 2008. Where is Ebay headed? What are the Top 3 reasons sellers have quit Ebay?
1. Sellers are Prevented from Leaving Negative Feedback to Buyers.
According to Ebay the introduction of this policy was to prevent a tit-for-tat feedback abuse followed by some Sellers. Unfortunately the measure they took was a bit extreme. Instead of focusing on the culprits who were practicing such conniving tactics Ebay decided to change the face of the entire feedback system to prevent such occurrences. Ebay sellers are furious, many have quit, and others have vowed that this was the straw that broke the camels back. Sellers now have no means of protection, no warning system to warn fellow sellers of fraudulent activity, false bidding, and other general information on poor Ebay buyers. I have been a Powerseller for nearly 3 years on Ebay, with sales ranging from $5,000 - $10,000 a month during those years. Since the implementation of this policy I had two high priced auction items end with Non Paying Bidders, I had only one occurrence prior to this new feedback policy change.. I believe that the accounts were created by competitors which had similar items listed and wanted to 'raise' the prices of that item while intending to not ever purchase it. This was the final straw that broke my back, I quit Ebay and will never return. By implementing this new feedback policy Ebay is hurting the very backbone of their business, the sellers. Sellers need protection just as much as buyers do, if not more so.
2. Feedback Changes to the Feedback Percentages, Totals, and calculations.
Ebay also decided to change the nature in which Feedback percentages are calculated. Prior to the change Ebay had three different categories for leaving feedback. Positive - which meant that the transaction went well and that the individual was pleased by the product and service received. Neutral - This meant something wasn't perfect, maybe the shipping time, the product description, etc and finally Negative -This would count as a negative on ones feedback calculation for the individuals overall Feedback percentage. This meant that something was drastically wrong with the auction, either they never received the item, the product was flawed, or anything in between. Overnight Ebay changed the face of the feedback percentage. They took all the feedback received and counted Neutrals as a negative score to ones feedback. Thus changing the face of feedback in general, and changing 'history'. When people left feedback before, they left neutral under the idea of what neutral was. Neutral was neither a positive for a negative transaction; it just wasn't the best that it could be. Overnight sellers were cancelled from the Powersellers program, had their feedback percentages dropped, and lost faith in Ebay altogether.
3. Ebay's Detailed Seller Ratings (DSR) and its Effects on Auction Listings
Detailed Seller Ratings were introduced to allow for Buyers to have a detailed feedback on a seller. DSR is a rather new idea which was implemented in 2007 as a measure to have deeper feedback for buyers on sellers. The categories involved for rating a seller were as follows- Item as described- Communication - Shipping Time- Shipping and Handling Charges
This program brought some criticism although I felt that the overall concept was needed. The simple 3 feedback types were broad for Buyers to compare different sellers of a product. This allowed for Buyers to have the information needed in deciding who to purchase their next product from. Unfortunately Ebay has taken a system that was fully functional and operational and decided to change it yet again. Don't fix something that isn't broken! Ebay has now begun to take practice of using DSR's to determine placement of auctions on pages. The lower the DSR of a seller, the lower the placement of their auction listing. This implementation screams for abuse. Through research of sellers in the past I've noticed the creation of 'fake' Ebay accounts. These accounts are created simply to inflate ones feedback percentage and score. Now consider what these sellers will do with the dependency of DSR to auction placement. If it means the difference of a higher rating on search results on Ebay and the opportunity to have more visibility you can count on the abuse to occur.
What type of changes does Ebay have in mind for the future? Is Ebay attempting to move towards the Amazon business model? What is the purpose of showing these faithful sellers to the door? The days of running a successful Ebay business are over! Relying on a business in which such drastic changes occur every quarter is impossible. Just when you've created a successful business model for a product, advertising, and shipping Ebay comes in and changes the nature of its business. Sellers that quit Ebay need an alternative, a new product, a new auction website, something!
